Outlook™ security solution

The basic solution for securing contact, calendar, e-mail and such Outlook™ based information for mobile devices is the same whether it is on the Smartphone, Pocket PC or Tablet PC platform. Each environment requires technical adjustments.

What needs to be protected?

The files and/or databases for all of the Outlook™ and Exchange™ related information on the mobile device needs to be protected. This includes information about contacts, calendars, e-mail, to do lists and e-mail attachments. If mobile Outlook™ is configured to use personally created folders, these should also automatically be protected – if not then there should be a possibility for the user to instruct security module to include the new storage path in the protection scheme.

How should the protection work?

The protection must be user configurable in the way it imposes the need to enter a key and/or password for the system. It can be based on, but should not be limited to, the normal Personal Identification Number (PIN) that is used to gain access to the mobile device at startup – if so, there should be a second system with a password that is activated if the wrong PIN is entered more than a specified number of times.

Standard encryption algorithms should be used and these algorithms will have to be upgradeable in some way – for instance if a 128-bit encryption algorithm has been determined as unsecure, it should be possible to use a larger key or completely change to another algorithm.
