The device

For a long time, there have been few devices that compete with the laptop computer when it comes to portability and availability. The laptop has become a tool that professionals cannot be without. The Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), which has been around for some years, has been fairly successful when specifically designed for a purpose, for instance FedEx or TNT.

The development of mobile phones have been going on for several years, but their use as something else besides a phone has not until just recently really been practical or even wanted. Even with phones with larger than average displays and keyboards tha  mimic the PC’s keyboard, such as Nokia’s Communicator, there has been no real thought about of integrating the mobile phone into the enterprise as something else besides a phone.

The Microsoft Smartphone, which was released in the end of 2002, is the first mobile phone that has the same user interface as the PC, Windows. This means that anyone used to Windows would automatically know how to use the Microsoft  Smartphone and its applications. A few of these applications are key to this project and discussion - pocket Outlook™. Synchronizing the PIM services can be done either by connecting the Smartphone to a PC with a standalone version of Outlook™ or by connecting to an Exchange™ server. The synchronization can also be done by connecting to the company network using General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) over the GSM network.
